Before getting started, Please read the Melmaruvathur first blog to understand in detail here. Today's Karuvarai, the sanctum, was once a wild untamed land that belonged to Adigalar Amma's father, Sri Gopala Nayakar. There stood a neem tree. It was a special tree. Typically the milk from the tree, the leaf, its fruit and the bark all taste bitter.

However this special tree drew people in the village and from the surrounding area in large numbers because the milk that oozed out of this tree tasted sweet and not bitter. People drank it and took it home and claimed that it cured many illnesses.

Then on November 28, 1966, all that changed. On that day a mega-storm hit the entire state of Tamil Nadu. In the fierce winds, this tree fell. Early next morning, in the heavy rains that fell, the ant-hill that was at the base of the tree also dissolved and there the Swayambhu was revealed.

At the same time, Adhiparasakthi, through Bangaru Adigalar said that the time for her to go to her rightful place had come and those who were brave enough to go with her could. So saying, Bangaru Adigalar reached the Swayambhu by rolling body all the way from his home to where once stood the special neem tree.

There Adhiparasakthi speaking through Adigalar informed Sri Gopala Nayakar to build a temple on that spot. Thus the Karuvarai was built there. In the early days a thatched roof and walls covered the Swayambhu and enclosed it. A small earthen lamp burned there. Bangaru Adigalar began his spiritual evolution in that place and gradually Adhiparasakthi took over his entire being. In the early days, Adhiparasakthi gave Arulvaaku through Adigalar in that spot. Only later on did he move to the newly-built Putru Mantapam to give Arulvaaku and the crowds increased in size. Only in 1977, 11 years after the revelation of the Swayambhu was the sculpture, murthi of Adhiparasakthi was established in the Karuvarai.
